Money shatters the young men's dreams
(1980) Money shatters the young men's dreams. The Countryman, 1980. [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Michael Young, a CSIRO Division of Land Resources Management researcher, discusses the ambition of many young Australians wanting to work on the land being an almost impossible financial possibility. A survey carried out among trading banks showed that most traditional lending institutions required a 50 per cent equity in the contemplated rural property before a loan was considered. Mr Young explains a possible solution being the establishment of land banks, similar to those operating overseas, under Government direction where those wanting to rent farmland could negotiate the purchase of property for the land bank and lease the property back to the applicants.
