Banks give new life to Gingin property

Busher, M. (1980) Banks give new life to Gingin property. The Countryman, 9 October 1980. 8 -9 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Without the reclamation success achieved with Whittington interceptor banks, Mr and Mrs Gavin Drew doubted if they would still be farming their 1,093 hectare property at Beermullah, near Gingin. At a recent WISALTS field day, with about 100 farmers and the leader the opposition, Ron Davies attending, Mr Drew summed up his experience from when he first bought the Gingin property, cleared and developed pasture, the subsequent alarming spread of salt conditions, and his interest in interceptor banks and land improvement.

This article contains five photographs by Brandon Read: Gavin Drew on one of the few remaining salt pans on his property; a bogged Chamberlain John Deere JD 850 in a trench watched by the field day attendees; Harry Whittington making a point during a discussion on the hard impervious layer of soil; David Wood, Arthur Dewar, and Eric Harris; and students from Keaney College, Bindoon, Richard Armstead of Coolup, David Bebeck of Moorine Rock, and Glen Clune of Mukinbudin.
