The outback torn limb from limb

Wilks, L. (1981) The outback torn limb from limb. National Farmer, 3 September 1981. p. 20 [Document] [Special Collections]

The Australian landscape is undergoing a drastic change as the few remaining native trees grow sicker by the year. Australia is facing the prospect of a countryside devoid of trees with the familiar and unique eucalyptus dotted landscape largely disappearing, leaving nothing but the fence lines to break the monotony. The causes of tree decline range from a century of clearing and ring-barking in the development of farmland. through to a generally ageing tree population because grazing prevents growth, and the complex interactions of man-made changes to the environment. There is no national planning or coordination, however programmes are getting underway in many corners of Australia. Some councils are providing trees and undertaking planting programme themselves. Research and promotion of tree survival are seen as essential in turning the trend around.

This article contains three images: a healthy landscape; trees devoid of leaves and growth; and a bulldozer clearing some land.
