Salt on the wounds
(1981) Salt on the wounds. Western Farmer and Grazier, 7 May 1981. p. 4 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
An editorial discussing the release of the Agriculture Department's 1979 salt land survey, just days after the federal government's Razor Gang slashed Australia's soil conservation programmes. These actions will have profound Implications for Western Australia, farmers and metropolitan dwellers alike. The Court government, in recent months, has taken steps to try to co-ordinate research programmes aimed at controlling salt encroachment. The 1979 salt land survey identified the extent and nature of the salt-affected agricultural land and acknowledges the increase, 173 per cent in five years. The new Commissioner of Soil Conservation, Dr Graeme Robertson who is to head the government's drive on the problems of soil degradation, has a challenging task ahead of him.
