Salt has got land equal to 200 farms

Zekulich, M. (1981) Salt has got land equal to 200 farms. The West Australian, 21 February 1981. p. 3 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Western Australian land equal in area to about 200 farms is now out of production because of salt. The Agriculture Department estimates that saline areas are now spreading at a rate of more than 19,000 hectares per year, in comparison, seven years ago, the average rate was 2250 hectares per year. Authorities lay most of the blame for the drastic state of wind eroded farm areas on the huge land releases in the 1960's. Six shires in the Merredin region are holding a meeting to consider setting up a soil conservation area. Proposals to be put at the meeting include, banning of further clearing in the region, seeking State and Federal aid for the provision of free trees for planting, the consideration of 10 per cent minimum of farmlands being left as natural bush land, and the education of local communities on the benefits of tree planting.
