Government pledge a "fair go"

(1989) Government pledge a "fair go". Elders Weekly, 3 August 1989. p. 47 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

A Federal Government strategy to assist rural and isolated students complete education was discussed at the Isolated Children's Parents' Association (ICPA) conference in Fremantle. The package was designed to address low finishing rates for rural students - as many as seventy percent of rural students who begin secondary education do not finish Year 12.

Bob Baker, the federal president of ICPA expressed reservations about the Federal Government program on the grounds that it was more helpful in getting school leavers into further education and training, but did not necessarily offer much to primary and secondary school students who are isolated. Increased support for children living and studying away from home for their Year 11 and 12 qualifications is suggested as a way to address this gap, according to the Minister for Employment, Education and Training.
