A response to a a scientific study conducted in Central Australia which suggested that rising salinity may have more to do with natural geological and hydrological cycles than land clearing or farming. The findings, if accepted, would have drastic implications for agriculture policy and conservation strategy. The main point emphasised by WISALTS is that replacing cleared trees is not sufficient to stall land degradation.
