Salt clouds farms' future

(1989) Salt clouds farms' future. The West Australian, 30 May 1989. p. 46 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

There are many challenges facing farmers in saline areas. The three primary aims for fighting against salinity given are: to prevent future salinisation; to get some production from land already salt affected; and to eventually reclaim all salt affected land. Perennial pastures seem to be more effective than annual pastures in terms of their uptake of groundwater and use as fodder. There is no one solution, however, and salinity can only be tackled with sound land management. A workshop on "Dryland Salinity Management" associated with the Fifth Australian Soil Conservation Conference will be held on 11-13 September 1989 in Katanning.
