Letter to the editor - Do not blame farmers for history's mistakes

Condon, R.W. (1990) Letter to the editor - Do not blame farmers for history's mistakes. The Australian, 23 August 1990. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Letter to the editor by R.W. Condon, a Fellow at the Australian Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

Arguing CSIRO landacre proposals are the result of politicisation of the institute. Mr Condon argues it is too simple to blame farmers, either first settlers or present-day, entirely for poor agricultural techniques; early settlers over-cleared as a result of community need and government instruction while modern farmers have inherited the consequences.

While Mr Condon acknowledges the vital role farmers have in rectifying the situation now, the rhetoric of blaming farmers ignores the community systems which led to the degradation crisis.
