Clear causes

Bamford, M. (1999) Clear causes. The West Australian, 1 March 1999. p. 11 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Newspaper article by Mike Bamford.

A retrospective which explains in simple terms how salinity became such a crisis in the Western Australian Wheatbelt. It explains how the land used to be in balance and the natural desalination mechanisms that were disrupted by colonial land settlement.

Using research by Irene Cunningham, Mr Bamford explains the refusal of those in political and economic power to listen to the warnings of agricultural experts has been an established pattern since the mid to late 1800's.

This article contains photographs by Willem van Aken/CSIRO of degradation in the Wheatbelt caused by salinity.
