Abstract
Reforms introduced in rural China since 1978 have created new areas of work and have profoundly changed the nature of others. 1 In doing so they have resulted in changes in the work patterns of women and men and have altered the existing gender division of labour and the values associated with it. In this chapter I will look at these changes in relation to a dichotomy between public and private spheres.
