Summary

Interview with May Pennefather by John Clements.

May Pennefather was one of four Australian nurses who worked in Spain during the Civil War.

May recalls the poor conditions of hospitals in the post-Depression period. She became involved in left wing politics through a coworker. After working in terrible conditions for six months, she volunteered for the small contingent of nurses sent to Spain as a protest against fascism.
