Summary
Alex Stewart interviewed by John Clements.
Tape 1 - Alex gives his personal history of growing up in a working class household in Scotland. He recalls the death of his mother; upon returning to Scotland, Alex found he had acclimatised so well to Perth weather that he could not stand the climate. Alex began working with the prison department almost immediately after returning to Perth.
Tape 2 - Alex talks about the history of Fremantle Prison. He explains terminology changes within the prisons department over time, including the processes for appointing new directors. He discusses some of the evolving procedures in Fremantle Prison.
Tape 3 - Alex and John discuss the subject of incarceration and its philosophical implications. They discuss the relationship between incarceration, authority and religion. Alex shares some anecdotes about prisoners and prison staff from his years there.
Tape 1 was recorded 5 December 1983. Tapes 2 and 3 were recorded 7 December 1983.
