Summary

Interview with Robert Urquhart by John Clements.

Robert Urquhart was born in Scotland, one of 8 children. His family were fairly poor and he started work in a brewery at 14 years old.

Robert joined the Cameron Highlanders in 1911 (aged 16 years) and in 1914 was sent to war in France. He talks about his war experiences as one of the 'Old Contemptibles', was wounded 3 times and the last injury saw him sent back to Ireland to train troops 'to be slaughtered'. In 1918 he was posted to India.

Employment prospects were poor once he was discharged and he decided to emigrate to Australia with his wife.
