Abstract

This thesis examines the plot structure of the Malay Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang China. Analysis is initially undertaken using a Western model, the cause and effect style plot. When this proves to be unsatisfactory in that it fails to account for a number of important elements in the text, an alternative paradigm is applied. This alternative is based on Hindu rasa theory and results in a more comprehensive analysis which then enables the text to be examined in its cultural context. The plot is related to the historical background from which it originated and scrutinized in terms of political circumstances and postulated author and audience. This particular text, and by extension perhaps others of a similar style and period, was not simply an entertainment but also performed a didactic function which supported the political and social fabric of the Malay court.
