Abstract

Surface water bodies such as lakes, rivers and wetlands play an essential role in ecological balance, serve as freshwater supplies and are valued by the general public as places of natural beauty. Proper management of surface water bodies can be assisted by modelling of surface water and groundwater interactions.

Different models of interaction between ground and surface water are presented in this work. We develop models suitable for two different scales, i.e., near field (local) and far field (regional).

Green’s second identity and potential theory are employed to present solutions in the form of an integral equation or a set of integral equations. Different numerical techniques, either existing or new, are then used to obtain the final solution.

Generic results allow us to analyse the influence of various hydrogeological factors on interaction between surface and subsurface water, as well as to highlight limitations of previous approaches.
