Abstract

This work has been undertaken to investigate one of the smaller main-line Christian denominations, the Baptists, in Western Australia, during the 21 years between the two World Wars. This period was chosen as it appeared to be a time when very little of significance was accomplished in the denomination. The pre-World War I enthusiasm for establishing the Baptist cause in the State had passed; the expansion as a result of post-World War II reconstruction and immigration had not yet occurred.

Very little research has been carried out on Baptists in Western Australian and this period in particular; therefore this thesis is predominantly a record of material that has been gathered and of some conclusions which were drawn from it concerning the clergy, laity, church purpose and polity, and community interaction.

The resources available for research, more fully described in the Introduction, have come from the church records housed in the Baptist Archives, 20 Hayman Road, Bentley. The major part of this has been minute books of the Baptist Union and its various committees and The West Australian Baptist News. Reliance has also been placed on extensive interviews to supplement the written text. Brief reference has been made to contemporary Western Australian historians to set the work in the context of its time. The title reflects the scope of research which has been carried out.
