Abstract

The two books under review here provide specific insight into and a broad understanding of opium and the economies and societies of Singapore and Java from 1800 to 1910. Carl Trocki's Opium and Empire joins James R. Rush's Opium to Java in providing the best historical overview of the intimate connection between opium, revenue farming, and Chinese entrepreneurship. Trocki focuses on Singapore, however, and Rush on Java, and their books have distinct approaches, emphases, and strengths, as well as different insights and conclusions.
