Summary

Springhill in the winter of 1938. That once very fertile paddock. The subsoil has collapsed. The excess water from the rain no longer finds its passage into the creek to drain away. It lays in ponds and finally moves in a line almost parallel to the creek finding every low spot to make another pond before moving on, eventually joining another creek some 3 kilometres away. The soil is 'dead'. There is no living organism left in the soil.
