Looking at the Avon River from the eastern approach: observe the dark shadow of water beneath the surface, just before the mottled area. That is the subsurface water trying to find an entrance to the river. The water has to build-up to a level to flow over the surface of the reconstructed soil. It is only a matter of time when the mottled area will extend to where the dark shadow of the subsurface water is static at this period of the year. The mottled area (sunken and misshapen area of salt and polluted water in the winter is approximately 1.5 kilometres wide on either side of the river). The soil is "dead". The position of this area is approximately 14 kilometres east of Quairading.
