Professor Sow-Theng Leong was Professor of Asian Studies at Murdoch University when he passed away on 14 January 1987.

A memorial service for Professor Leong was held in the Function Centre at Murdoch University. The service was conducted by Dr G. V. S. Hadley, Principal of Methodist Ladies College, with lessons read by Sir Ronald Wilson, Chancellor of Murdoch University and Dr Robison, Dean of the School of Human Commnication at Murdoch University. Professor G. M. Denning from the University of Melbourne and Professor Peter Boyce, Vice Chancellor of Murdoch University, gave appreciations of the life of Professor Leong.
