Abstract

4,6,8-Trimethoxy-1-naphthol (1)1 is an important intermediate in the synthesis of a large number of naturally occurring oxygenated naphtho[2,3-c] pyranquinones. A key step in the formation of this material involves enolization and methylation of the enol ether (7) formed by a Diels-Alder reaction, followed by pyrolysis of the product (8).
