Reliability of femoral blood vessel diameter measurement by B-mode ultrasonography

Abstract

Ultrasonography is a useful non-invasive method to determine femoral arterial and venous vessel diameters. However few studies have reported the reliability of diameter measurement using ultrasound imaging. The purpose of this study was to examine intra-measurer reliability of femoral vessel diameter measurements both within- and between-days using B-mode ultrasonography, 20 volunteers were assessed in duplicate for right femoral artery and vein diameters on two separate trials separated by 3 days. Typical error of the measurement and coefficient of variation were calculated for within- and between-day intra-measurer reliability. Femoral vein and artery diameter measurements within-day demonstrated good reliability, shown by low typical error and low coefficient of variation (0.5 mm and 6.9% for vein, 0.5 mm and 7.9% for artery, respectively). However a higher typical error and coefficient of variation were evident for between-day vein and artery diameter measurements (1.0 mm and 13.4% for vein, 0.9 mm and 16.0% for artery, respectively). These results indicate that using the current methodology in this sample, ultrasonography can give reliable within-day femoral vessel diameter measurements, but caution is recommended when using this method to determine femoral vessel diameter measurements over days
