As part of an Australian national response to the global reassessment of the value and purpose of arts in schools, and society more generally, the Australian Government recently commissioned two important reviews: the National Review of School Music Education (2005) and the National Review of Education in Visual Arts, Craft, Design and Visual Communication (current). The Centre for Learning Change and Development based at Murdoch University in Western Australia has conducted both reviews with research teams drawn from across the country.
As digital technology and globalisation not only reshape the way we work but also how we conceive, think, experience and act, the capacity to think and act creatively is seen, more than ever before, as a necessary functioning skill. The potential for education in the arts to meet this – and other - emerging needs is evident.
Whilst the scope of each review differs, both aim to envision Australian arts education for a changing world. To this end, both reviews incorporate a range of data gathering mechanisms aimed at generating rich data that enables key issues and challenges to be identified, useful conclusions to be drawn and productive ways forward to be proposed. Respondents include teachers, students, arts organizations and instrumentalities, teacher-educators and other key stakeholders. In the interests of equity, a breadth of learning needs, groups and settings are incorporated into the process of inquiry.
In this presentation, the researchers will share their findings in a selection of key areas, including emergent challenges and paradigms of arts education, the status and practice of arts education in Australia, best-practice exemplars and productive pathways to improvement.
