Abstract
The acidity of cloud water in the vicinity of Sydney was measured both windward and leeward of the city. The results suggest that, although urban pollution may lower the pH to values below 5.0, relatively clean samples tend to be more alkaline than would be expected from samples in equilibrium with atmospheric levels of CO2. This suggests that large concentrations of sulfate ion may be produced within clouds in this locality.
