Young people have a great interest in renewable energy and this is translated into a desire for information and direct experience with the technology. It is important to address this need in order to build familiarity and consumer confidence ill the technology and to promote informed debate about energy options.

The Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Renewable Energy (ACRE) was established by the Commonwealth Government in 1996 to promote renewable energy and greenhouse gas abatement technologies. In addition to research development programs aimed at producing new technology, ACRE has an important role in the communication of information about greenhouse issues and renewable energy technology to the community and school students, thus building consumer confidence and facilitating market development.

This paper examines ACRE's approach to the development of programs for school and community education including some examples of successful programs which have been developed and implemented.
