This chapter explores the production of biochar from biomass and waste for energy, carbon sequestration, fertilizer, and fodder detannification applications within the agricultural West Midland region of Western Australia. This research finds that the commercial return from generating bioenergy (electricity) and soil carbon sequestration compare relatively unfavorably against increasing primary agricultural productivity from using biochar where soils and systems are compatible. This research also suggests the use of biochar as a detannification agent for some leguminous fodder shrubs may be a promising commercial application. At this early stage, the complexity of biomass and carbon ownership streams alongside technical and economic questions from both carbon sequestration and regional bioenergy generation requires greater researcher attention to current/future biomass processing needs. Biochar application in the agricultural sector encourages the development of relatively simple processing technologies that produce biochar from waste (agricultural and municipal), and correspondingly appropriate methods for crops and pasture introduction.
