Movement of radium through soil.
In: Proceedings of Chemeca 81 Conference, 30 August - 4 September, Christchurch, New Zealand
Abstract
The movement of Ra2+ below a tailings dam was simulated by 2+ 2+ by laboratory soil column experiments, employing Ba2+ and Ca2+, due to the limitation of the amount of Ra226 that can be handled in the laboratory, and their chemical similarities as alkaline earth cations. The results of the experiments show that these cations are adsorbed by soil by an ion-exchange process, which consists of an instantaneous portion and a time dependent portion.
