Abstract
An account of newspaper crime reportage in the nineteenth century is presented by examining crime news in the colonial community of mid-nineteenth century New South Wales. The two aspects of crime reportage which serve to underline both the universality and uniqueness of the colonial press, and selectivity and the political importance attached to crime, are focused on.
