A comprehensive species list of the fishes present in the upper Severn Estuary has been compiled from samples collected from the intake screens of several Power Stations in the area. Weekly sampling from Oldbury-upon-Severn has provided the basis for a quantitative appraisal of the pattern of change in both species composition and abundance. The greatest abundance of fish were found in the autumn and winter when the juvenile stages, particularly of certain gadoids and clupeids, appeared in large numbers. Comparisons between the environmental conditions and the fish fauna present in different years has enabled tentative proposals to be made of the way in which salinity, discharge and temperature may influence abundance and migratory movements. The results of studies on the river lamprey and a few selected teleosts were presented to demonstrate how Power Station sampling can also be used to help elucidate different aspects of an animal’s biology.
