But Pottsie is a God: Researching Australian public relations history using interviews
Fitch, K. (2013) But Pottsie is a God: Researching Australian public relations history using interviews. In: 63rd Annual International Communication Association (ICA) Conference 2013, 17 - 21 June 2013, London, England
Abstract
Drawing on recent scholarship on public relations historiography and oral history, this study offers a reflection on the author’s experiences of researching Australian public relations history, focusing on the 1980s and 1990s. Research which identifies ‘pioneers’ and relies on interviews with industry practitioners requires a critical approach to avoid assuming the practitioners’ perceptions and experiences are an unproblematic and authentic recounting of historical events. Rather, the author suggests the subjective nature of interviews and remembering is worthy of analysis, but only if a critical stance and authorial reflexivity are adopted.
