Abstract

Educators will always be participants in educational change, yet, individuals can choose for their participation to be more active than passive. This workshop is about active participation in educational change as it relates to literacy teaching and learning. The aim is first to explore the connections between the evolving concept of literacies and the evolving practices that surround literacy learning and teaching; and second, to advance the dialogue about the dynamic role that literacy educators can play in the process of educational change. The workshop will address the evolving understanding of literacies, the emphasis on literacy as social practice, the multi-layered nature of literacy learning and teaching, and the importance of ensuring that home and school literacies connect in meaningful ways. The workshop will include the screening a short DVD /video based on the project — "Making Connections to Promote Early Literacy" developed to illustrate the process of learning undertaken by early childhood teachers in making changes and reflecting on their practice. The DVD provides clear illustration of evolving literacies and evolving practices as they relate to literacy learning and teaching in the early childhood context. The workshop content and activities have relevance to literacy learning and teaching in any context. Educators need to understand the dynamic roles they can play in the process of educational change and leadership. This participation in the change process and awareness of the learning process as one which is on-going, is not only the province of classroom teachers, but also pre-service teachers, teacher educators, researchers and families.
