Abstract

Six cylindrical plastic enclosures were used to test the effects of an organophosphate pesticide (temephos) on a pest chironomid, Polypedilum nubifer Skuse, in a shallow wetland. High mortality of larval P. nubifer occurred in the treated enclosures compared to the controls, and few differences in the physico‐chemical properties of the water were recorded between treated and control enclosures, and the surrounding non‐enclosed region. These results indicate that small, portable, in situ mesocosms can provide a useful tool for assessing the effects of pesticides or pollutants in wetlands.
