Abstract

Twelve participants, ranging in age from 16 to 82 years, undertook cognitive rehabilitation via a computer based program. The Psychological Software Services’ PSS CogReHab program was administered to the twelve participants who presented with a range of brain impairments. They were classified into four groups: mild head injury, moderate head injury, neurotoxic injury, and attention deficit disorder. Participants were assessed before and after CogReHab treatment via the Halstead Reitan Neuropsychological Battery and the California Computer Assessment Package to determine their degree of improvement following treatment. All groups demonstrated improvement after treatment, but those with neurotoxic injuries showed least improvement. Ten of the participants were between one and three years post injury, and two were less than one year post injury. The most significant improvements in cognitive functioning occurred in the areas of information processing speed, reaction time, and general intellectual functioning. Also, most participants reported subjective improvements in tasks of daily living. Although this project was not a controlled study, it does demonstrate that cognitive rehabilitation programs, such as PSS CogReHab, have merit in the treatment of brain impairment, regardless of etiology.
