Abstract

Reduction potentials of the Cu(II)/Cu(I), Cu(I)/Cu(0) and Ag(I)/Ag(0) couples have been measured over the whole range of dimethylsulfoxide—water compositions in the presence of 0.1 M HCl and the changes in activity and free energies of transfer (ΔGtr) of Cu2+, Cu+, CuCl−2, Ag+ and AgCl−2 from water to DMSOH2O mixtures are reported. Over the entire range of DMSOH2O compositions, values of ΔGtr CuCl−2 and AgCl−2 remain relatively constant with respect to water whilst values of ΔGtr, Cu2+, Cu+ and Ag+ decrease significantly. The competitive solvation and complexation of Cu+, Cu+ and Ag+ with DMSO and Cl− is discussed, and a possible application of the Cu(II)DMSOH2OCl− system to processing precious metal residues is considered.
