Abstract
Personal technology refers to hand-held devices, small enough to be individually used by students and yet powerful enough to provide various means of support for mathematics education. Recent developments of this kind are briefly described and their significance for East Asian mathematics education analysed. A computational role, an experiential role and an influential role are identified, and the significance of these for East Asian countries is explored.
