Decomposition of resin binders and the relationship between the gases formed and the casting surface quality

Scott, W.D. and Bates, C.E. (1975) Decomposition of resin binders and the relationship between the gases formed and the casting surface quality. Transactions of the American Foundrymen's Society, 83 . pp. 519-524.

Abstract

This progress report of a continuing investigation describes the results obtained in a study of the gases formed during steel casting production in molds bonded with toluene sulfonic acid (TSA)-cured furan resin, phosphoric acid-cured furan resin, carbon dioxide-gassed sodium silicate, and carbon dioxide-gassed sodium silicate containing 20% sucrose. Future research will be concerned with determining the gases formed at the mold-metal interface during iron casting production, and with relating the casting surface quality to the nature of the gases formed.
