Cultural studies is rather suspicious of effects research. It associates such work with a long tradition of seeking to control the popular classes, most recently manifested in contemporary moral panics about audiences. This chapter offers a meta-critical survey of media effects from a cultural studies point of view, summarizes how cultural studies itself undertakes audience research, engages criticism from within and beyond the tradition, and outlines best practices for the future...
