An assessment is made of the value of spin-polarisation measurements in low energy electron diffraction. It is found that the degree of spin-polarisation is strongly dependent on the scattering properties of the atomic cores and on the structure of the surface barrier. The prominent features of LEED intensity profiles are however determined principally by the structure of the crystal surface. Therefore spin-polarisation measurements in conjunction with LEED intensity measurements could provide additional information for surface structural analysis. It is suggested that the most promising experimental conditions for spin-polarisation measurements in LEED is at low energies, with high resolution in the electron beams.
