Abstract

The emf of the cell M|0.01 M MClO4 in H2O-solvent|3.5 M NaClO4|3 M NaCl|sat KCl|sce has been measured for M = Cu2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ in a range of aqueous acetonitrile (AN), ethanol (EtOH), and dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) compositions. Previously reported liquid junction potentials for this salt bridge and solvent mixtures were used to correct the data to provide free energies of transfer ΔGt and transfer activity coefficients γt of these ions consistent with the tetraphenyl arsonium tetraphenyl borate (TATB) assumption.

It is shown that the previously reported Eo data on these ions based upon the ferrocene-ferricinium or bisbiphenyl chromium or negligible liquid junction potential assumptions, differ significantly, especially in H2O-DMSO mixtures. The EJ values used in this work provide a consistent and rational set of free energies of transfer of Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) in these mixed solvents, and is used to correct literature data found for Ni(II) in DMSO-H2O.
