A culminating stage of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Murdoch University is to partake in either a research thesis, or an internship in a relevant industry placement. This internship is a fantastic opportunity for students to apply all that has been taught over the past four years and to gain practical experience in the real world. This is of particular importance as students approach the end of their degrees, as it introduces a modern engineering world, and prepares them for the rigors of a formidable industry.
This report as a final step of the internship program provides a great insight into the activities and projects during six months at Lycopodium Minerals. Over this period, two major projects were undertaken. The first, the Tropicana Gold Mine project, where most of the time was spent and the second was the Marandoo Iron Ore project. The placement involved joining the Process Control engineering team to create the control systems that operate each site, which is in line with the Industrial Computer System major offered at Murdoch University.
In this report a great deal of information is given on the backgrounds of each project to provide adequate understanding, and also what tasks and activities were conducted as part of the placement in the Process Control team. Each project included many challenges that needed to be overcome in order to achieve a specific task and in doing so invaluable exposure to the works of a modern engineer was gained. One such challenge was the idea of effective time management and the subsequent productivity that is achieved. This is in addition to other challenges such as networking, customer contact, business communication and the application of general knowledge.
