Hefter, G. and May, P.M. (1992) Ionic strength lives! Chemistry in Britain, 27 (7). p. 620.
Abstract
It as indeed upsetting to read the obituary for ionic strength recently composed by Darvell and Leung;’ but not because they are ‘irreverent to some grand old masters of chemistry’. Their announcement consigns ionic strength to the grave, it seems, merely because of the misbehaviour of certain close associates! We doubt that the inadequacies of Debye—Hückel equations and relatives deserve capital punishment as discussed by Darvell and Leung, but see no grounds whatsoever to suggest that ionic strength, despite its venerable age, is not alive and well.
