Abstract
There are many definitions of the term community of learners, but regardless of which is used, it is important for instructional designers, instructors, and facilitators to understand how these informal groups can enhance 13 or thwart 13 a learning event or program. In this paper, we are particularly interested in 1Cvirtual 1D communities of learners, the challenges they face, and some specific ways that we will try to meet their needs in a web-based learning program designed to facilitate the development of expertise in handling sensitive pharmaceutical products. The design research approach and methodology of the study are explained, together with emerging design principles.
