Abstract
The effect of substrate and background magnesium sulfate on the electrocrystallization of cobalt from acidic sulfate solutions was analyzed using cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Experiments were carried out using 100 mL of solution in a 150 mL cell containing a stationary disc electrode, reference electrode and Pt spiral counter electrode. Results indicated that the influence of magnesium sulfate on the crossover or open-circuit potential was minimal when present in solution. The total current for the cathodic reduction of cobalt was independent of the presence of magnesium sulfate, even upto 1.0 M.
